Responsible Tourism Code for Kangaroo Valley

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend

The beautiful tourism community of Kangaroo Valley, NSW, Australia has recently agreed a Code of Ethics at its AGM 19 July 2010. This commitment builds on its existing GHG Emissions reduction program (the Green Kangaroo) and being Australia’s first Plastic Bag Free Mainland Town. There are now plans to introduce a voluntary ban on plastic water bottles. All efforts to help reduce tourisms negative environmental impacts and improve social and economic sustainability.

These examples, by the Kangaroo Valley Tourist Association and the community, show an Australian destination accepting its role of stewardship and taking responsibility for its future health. Particularly interesting is that this is at a time when the Australian domestic tourism sector is under pressure and many operators use price as a way to build short term sales. However, in this (ever so slightly rebellious) community operators and community are combining efforts to concentrate on creating a better place to live in and a better place to visit which in turn will help create Local Distinctiveness and a recipe for real holidays. The responsible code under pins the aim to achieve a higher yield from visitors happy to stay longer, see more, learn more and spend more on local produce.
